ZIM vs AFG 3rd ODI: Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by 4 wickets to complete series whitewash
ZIM vs AFG 3rd ODI: Afghanistan whitewashed Zimbabwe 3-0 in a one-day international series in Harare on Thursday, but struggled to chase down a modest score thanks to some poor batting.
The tourists were set a target of 136 to win, but they scored slowly and lost wickets, leaving them at 60-4 following the last delivery of the 20th over.
Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (38) and Mohammad Nabi (34 not out) then carefully turned the tide, slowly building runs to deliver a four-wicket win with 74 balls to spare.
Zimbabwe were put in to bat by the tourists, but only Sikandar Raza (38) and Ryan Burl (21) made any impact, as they were all out for 135 in 44.5 overs.
Afghanistan surpassed England for second place in the World Cup Super League standings with victory of 60 runs and eight wickets at Harare Sports Club. They are 20 points behind Bangladesh despite having played six less matches.
The top eight Super League teams qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India. While the remaining five nations must compete in a 10-team tournament. With just two teams advancing to the finals.
Afghanistan has won 10 of its 12 Super League matches. While South Africa, a far more well-known team, is in 11th place after winning only four of its 13 ODIs.
Zimbabwe batted poorly, scoring only eight fours between them, with lower-order batsman Milton Shumba hitting the lone six.
Only Raza and Burl were able to make an impact against a six-man Afghan assault. That grabbed at least one wicket.
With three wickets, Rashid Khan was the most successful Afghan bowler, while Nabi and Fazalhaq Farooqi both took two.
