65kg – Bajrang BAJRANG (IND) vs Yet to be decided
Having won the Commonwealth Games gold medal recently, Bajrang entered the tournament as the second seed in the 65kg category. He was one of the favourites to reach the final in this category. Having gained a direct entry into the pre-quarterfinal stage, Bajrang Punia faced Cuba’s Alejandro Enrique Valdes Tobier. At the start of the bout, he suffered a wound on his head that required medical treatment. A heavily bandaged Bajrang came back and won the game 5-4 to advance to the quarterfinal.
However, he was nowhere near his best in the quarterfinal against USA’s John Mikael Diakomihalis as she suffered a loss based on his opponent’s technical superiority to lose the opportunity to win the gold medal. However since the American reached the final, he can now have a shot at the bronze medal.

Bajrang will take on the winner between Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia and Bulgaria’s Vladimir Vladimirov Dubov. Tevanyan is a 22-year old wrestler who won the silver medal at the U-23 World Championships last year. Meanwhile, 35-year old Dubov i an experienced campaigner who has won two World Championships medal in the past.
Bajrang is already the only Indian to win three medals at the world championship and now has a chance to add another medal to his tally, which will be his third bronze medal at the world stage. He won bronze medals in 2013 and 2019, while he bagged a silver medal at the 2018 edition of the tournament.
India had collected two medals in the previous edition of the World Championships at Oslo, Norway in 2021 with a silver and bronze. This time India had a poor show as only Vinesh Phogat has so far managed to win the bronze medal and with this being the last day, Bajrang would look to end the tournament with a medal.
