Thailand Masters Badminton: Ashmita Chaliha is the only remaining Indian in the Women’s Singles. She is in action against Denmark’s sixth seed Line Kjaersfeldt for a spot in the quarterfinal. Chaliha has won the first game 21-19. She has however went down 13-21 in the second game. The deciding game is currently in progress. Kiran George bowed out from the Thailand Masters 2023 after suffering a 22-20, 15-21, 20-22 defeat against sixth seed Lee Cheuk Yiu in the second round on Thursday, 2nd February 2023. George had the match in his grip but he let it slip away in the end.Sai Praneeth will aim to make it to the quarterfinals as he will be in action later in the day. Former World No.10 Sai Praneeth defeated Mads Christophersen in the first round of the Thailand Masters. Sai Praneeth brushed aside the Danish player with a 21-13, 21-19 victory. He will next face South Korea’s qualifier Jeon Hyeok-jin in the second round.
World No.49 Sai Praneeth is aiming to climb his way back up in the ranking will look to make a deep run in the tournament. He enters as the favourite in the upcoming contest. Jeon Hyeok-jin meanwhile defeated Victor Svendenen in straight games in the first round.
Kiran George vs Lee Cheuk Yiu
- 22-20 to Yiu, Another net-error from George helps Yiu cinch the match.
- 21-20 to Yiu, Lee Chiuk Yiu gets to the match point afer a smash from George lands on the net.
- 19-19 to Yiu, George allows Yiu to level the scores as he makes three successive errors.
- 11-9 to George, The Indian has made a good comeback as he maintained his lead right from the start of the decider.
Third Game
- 21-15 to Yiu, Lee Chiuk yiu takes the contest into the deciding set.
- 11-6 to Yiu, Yiu takes a five-point lead to enter the interval in 2nd game.
Second Game
- 22-20 to George, Kiran George clinches the first game as Yiu yet again makes an error.
- 20-19 to George, A misjudged leave from Cheuk Yiu helps George take the lead.
- 19-19 to George, George manages to level the scores after Yiu hits away.
- 11-8 to George, Kiran George enters the interval with a thre point deficit.
Kiran George earned a hard-fought win against Lee Chia-hao from Chinese Taipei in the first round. He had to play three games to clinch a 21-17, 19-21, 23-21 victory. The 22-year-old will next face a tough challenge against third seeded Lee Cheuk Yiu. Yiu defeated qualifier Riku Hatano in straight games in the first round.
Ashmita Chaliha vs Line Kjaersfeldt
Ashmita Chaliha made it to the second round after sailing past compatriot Anupama Upadhyaya in straight games in the first round. Chaliha had a slow start to the contest but came back to defeat 17-year old Upadhyaya 21-16, 21-19. The Indian is now bracing up for the challenge against sixth seeded Line Kjaersfeldt.
The Danish player meanwhile made her way into the second round after beating Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova 21-12, 21-12 in the first round. Both Chaliha and Kjaersfeldt will be facing each other for the first time in their career.
In the Men’s Doubles, Ishaan Bhatnagar and Sai Pratheek will be up against Thailand’s qualifiers Tanadon Punpanich and Wachirawit Sothon in the second round.
Ishaa Bhatnagar will also be in action in the Mixed Doubles. Partnering Tanisha Crasto, the duo will face Indonesia’s Akbar Cahyono and Marsheilla Islami for a spot in the quarterfinals.
