South Africa hot contenders for upcoming T20 World Cup, says Wasim Jaffer
Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer claimed that South Africa, coming off a 2-1 victory over England in the three-match T20 series, are strong contenders for the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Recent T20I series vs England were won by South Africa 2-1. The first game of the series saw England taking the lead, but South Africa planned a comeback and won the last two games. Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian batter, had intense feelings following South Africa’s victory over England.
“Congratulations @OfficialCSA on the series win Must say the way SA have come up in the last year or so has been brilliant. They’re definitely one of the hot contenders for the T20 WC now. #ENGvSA” he said in a tweet after the match.
The fans entertained by the series thanks to strong performances from both teams in each of the three games. Reeza Hendricks, the series’ first half-century scorer for South Africa, did so in each of the three games.
Rilee Rossouw performed admirably in two of the games as well. In the second match, the batter was only 6 runs short of a century. Tristan Stubbs also shone in the opening game, but South Africa was unable to prevail.
Up the opening game of the series, Lungi Ngidi turned in his greatest performance of his career. After taking a total of 5 wickets while only giving up 39 runs.
Tabraiz Shamsi also put up a standout performance in South Africa’s two victories, taking three and five wickets in the last two matches, respectively.
In the second game of the series, Aiden Markram also scored a half-century. And Andile Phehlukwayo was effective with the bowl throughout the entire competition.
As not every team is capable of defeating England on their own home field. South Africa would have a lot of positives to take away from the series.
An earlier 5-match T20I series between South Africa and India ended in a 2-2 draw. Since the last game could not played.
South Africa was unable to get through the Super 12 stage in the campaign for the 2021 World Cup. Despite tied for second with Australia, they ranked third due to a lesser net run rate.
