- Daniil Medvedev is making his return to the ATP Tour ever since losing his World No.1 ranking after the US Open.
- Medvedev is currently ranked No.4 in the ATP Rankings after he faced fourth round defeat at the US Open this year.
- Medvedev started the year with a runner-up finish at the Australian Open. However towards the end of the hard court season he suffered an injury and underwent sports hernia surgery.
- He was back just ahead of the French Open and faced first round defeat at the the Geneva Open by losing against Richard Gasquet.
- He then played at the French Open and suffered defeat in the fourth round as he lost to Marin Cilic.
- Being a Russian, he was not allowed to participate in Wimbledon this year. However he played in many grass court tournament and finished as runner-up at Halle Open and Libema Open.
- He finally won his first title of the year at the Los Cabos Openb, where he defeated Cameron Norrie in straight sets in the final.
- He then bowed out from the first round at the Canadian Open as he lost to Nick Kyrgios.
- Just ahead of the US Open he reached the semifinal at the Cincinnati Masters, where he went down against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
- He started the US Open campaign by defeating Stefan Kozlov, Arthur Rinderknech and Wu Yibing in straight sets but he couldn’t do much against Nick Kyrgios, who defeated him in four sets.

- Stan Wawrinka has finally ended his losing streak in the main draw of any tournament at the ATP Tour as he defeated Joao Sousa in straight sets in the first round.
- Wawrinka was winless since the Queen’s Club Championships in June this year as he faced first round defeats at Swedish Open, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters.
- He bowed out from the first round at the US Open after retiring due to a knee injury.
- He recovered fully and entered Moselle Open as a qualifier. He defeated Laslo Djere in straight sets in the first round in qualifier, before defeating Zsombor Piros in a three-setter to enter the main draw.
- He faced Joao Sousa and clinched a straight set victory to set up clash with Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
Medvedev vs Wawrinka Head-to-head: Both the players have faced each other three time in the past with Medvedev leading the head-to-head record 2-1. They last met at the Australian Open in 2020 with Wawrinka winning the Round of 16 contest after winning in five sets. Medvedev enters the match as the favourite. However Wawrinka has shown good form in the first round and will look to challenge the World No.4.
