Despite showing promise, one poor day has cost India a shot at the title. Their loss in the shootout against NewZealand will haunt Team India for a long time. But credit to the team, they bounced back brilliantly against Japan. A terrific show in the 2nd half helped them thrash Asian Games gold medallists 8-0 to avoid a worst-ever finish.
Now, the aim will be to wrap up the tournament with a win. Head coach Graham Reid admitted after Japan win that it was difficult to motivate the boys. But Harmanpreet Singh & Co showed character.
“It has been a tough 72 hours for the players after that loss. But we have to refocus and win the match. We have to score some goals and have to improve our performance,” Graham Reid said ahead of the Japan clash.

However, on a personal note, he has to finish the campaign with a win. He admitted that Hockey India will be reviewing his contract after a disappointing campaign.
“Look, I have signed the contract through Paris Olympics. But we will be reviewing, I assume, at the end of this World Cup. But the next game is what I am focusing on. “After these two classification matches, we have Pro League matches against Germany and Australia and then we have a test series against Australia. But our focus is on the next match,” he said.

For SouthAfrica, it has been so near yet so far. After putting up a great performance against Argentina in the opener, SA have fizzled away. They have lost to France and have been hammered by Australia (2-9). While they beat Malaysia 6-3, SA won’t be happy with their 2nd half show. They had to chase the entire second half.
Against India, SouthAfrica have won only once and that too back in 2012. In the last few games, it has been goal fests with India scoring 10 goals twice.
