ENG vs IND: ‘Toss was right call to make’, says India skipper Rohit Sharma after win over England
ENG vs IND: India captain Rohit Sharma said that choosing to bowl after winning the toss was the right choice after his team thrashed England in the opener of the three-match series.
Team India defeated England by 10 wickets in the opening one-day international of the three-match series on Tuesday at the Kennington Oval thanks to an explosive partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan and a six-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah.
“Looking at the overhead conditions and the pitch, the toss was a right call to make. We used the conditions upfront really well. We never worry about the conditions because we have got the guys who can just come out and use those conditions. There was some swing and seam up front and we exploited them well. When you play in such conditions, you have to understand the assistance and have field placements accordingly,” said Rohit in a post-match presentation.
The Men in Blue were able to reach their target of 111 runs in just 18.4 overs thanks to the performances of Rohit (76 runs off 58 balls) and Shikhar (31 runs off 54 balls).

“We knew our bowlers could swing the ball both ways and hence had that kind of field. Shikhar and I understand each other quite well, except for the first ball where there was that misjudgement. He is playing ODIs after a long time,” said Rohit.
“We know what he brings to the table for us. Experienced player and he has done well for us in the past in these conditions. The hook is a high-risk shot, I understand that, but as long as it comes out right, I am happy,” he added.
Team India’s pursuit of 111 got off to a respectable start. As the opening duo of Rohit and Dhawan slowly advanced the score. The pair scored 21 runs in six overs before picking up the pace. And slamming 35 runs in the following four overs to turn the game around.
In 10 overs, the Men in Blue scored 50 runs, and both of their hitters were still at the crease. Team India reached the 100-run milestone in 18 overs as the game continued to move along steadily. Thanks in large part to Rohit, who reached his half-century in 49 balls.
The pair scored 13 runs in the following four balls with only 11 runs needed to win. And leading Team India to a 10-wicket victory in just 18.4 overs. Also a 1-0 series lead over England in the three-match ODI series.
