ENG vs IND: The Indian opening tandem of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan scored their 5,000th ODI run on Tuesday.
The pair reached this milestone on Tuesday during the first One-Day International of the three-match series against England at the Kennington Oval. It took them 12 deliveries to do so. The two were the fourth couple in the world to reach the milestone with this record. With a combined total of 6,609 runs, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are at the top of the list. Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden of Australia, who have scored 5,372 runs, are next, followed by Desmond Haynes and G. Greenridge, who have scored 5,150 runs.
In the opening ODI of the three-match series, Team India defeated England by 10 wickets thanks to a brisk partnership between Rohit & Shikhar and a six-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah.
The Men in Blue were able to reach their target of 111 runs in just 18.4 overs thanks to the performances of Rohit (76 runs off 58 balls) and Shikhar (31 runs off 54 balls). In addition to Bumrah, Mohammed Shami also claimed three wickets while Prasidh Krishna was content with just one.
Chasing 111, Team India got off to a respectable start thanks to the opening duo of Rohit & Dhawan, who steadily advanced the innings. The pair scored 21 runs in six overs before picking up the pace. And slamming 35 runs in the following four overs to turn the game around.
In 10 overs, the Men in Blue scored 50 runs, and both of their hitters were still at the crease. Team India reached the 100-run milestone in 18 overs as the game continued to move along steadily thanks in large part to Rohit, who reached his half-century in 49 balls.
The pair scored 13 runs in the following four balls with only 11 runs needed to win. And leading Team India to a 10-wicket victory in just 18.4 overs. Also a 1-0 series lead over England in the three-match ODI series.
On Thursday at Lord’s in London, the second ODI will be played between the two teams.
