ENG vs IND 5th Test, Day 4 Highlights: At the conclusion of the final session of Day Four of the current fifth and final Test against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Monday, a 150-run partnership between Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root helped turn the tide in England’s favour.

At the conclusion of the day’s play, Root (76*) and Bairstow (72*) led England with a score of 259/3. The perseverance and strokeplay of both in-form batters rendered the Indians completely incompetent. After tea, England resumed play at 107/1 with opener Alex Lees (56*) and Ollie Pope (0*) both standing at the wicket unbeaten.

After tea, India secured a quick wicket when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Pope for a three-ball duck, returning him to the pavilion after wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant successfully caught the ball that had struck the edge of his bat.

In the following over, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja ran Lees out. At 109 runs, England lost their third wicket.

Following this, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow resumed their side’s pursuit in fine fashion. The two partnered for fifty runs. As Root-Bairstow proceeded to attack the Indian bowlers, the situation unexpectedly began to tilt more in England’s favour.

Bairstow and Root put up a 100-run partnership in 141 balls. These two kept scoring runs while the Indian bowlers were helpless to stop them. In 196 balls, they both reached their half centuries and finished off their 150-run partnership.

With 119 runs needed to win and tie the series, Root-Bairstow made sure their team exited the final session unscathed.

Before tea, England’s opening pair of Alex Lees and Zak Crawley put up a century partnership after skipper Ben Stokes led from the front, taking four wickets to dismiss India for 245 in the second innings as the guests set the hosts a 378-run mark.

With the post-lunch session starting at 229/7, Mohammed Shami was bowled for 13 by English captain Ben Stokes in the fourth ball of the tea period. The captain never looked back after that, dismissing first-innings centurion Ravindra Jadeja for 23 after he sliced the ball onto his stumps, leaving the hosts for 236 after losing their ninth wicket.

To bowl out India for 245, Stokes got rid of Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah in his subsequent over for seven. The hosts gave the guests a 378-run goal.

With Cheteshwar Pujara (50*) and Rishabh Pant (30*) at the crease, India began the Day at 125/3. Before Pujara was caught by Alex Lees at the backward point and bowled by Stuart Broad for 66. The pair added another 28 runs to their fifty-run partnership.

After scoring an outstanding 146 runs in the first innings, Pant maintained his strong batting form and reached his half-century. Prior to being dismissed by Matty Potts for 19 after being caught by James Anderson at mid-wicket. While attempting to pull, Iyer also smashed Broad and Potts for fours.

At the crease next was Ravindra Jadeja. Pant’s innings came to an end at 57 when he caught at slips by Joe Root. And bowled by spinner Jack Leach.

When Shardul Thakur came to the crease to replace Jadeja. He quickly dismissed for only 4, and India lost their seventh wicket with the score at 198.

India was led through the rest of the session without incident by Mohammed Shami and Jadeja.

For India, Mohammed Shami (13*) and Ravindra Jadeja (17*) were unbeaten at the wicket going into lunch. India still has a comfortable 361-run advantage in the game.
