Following a few cagey minutes, Joao Cancelo’s foul on Karim Adeyemi resulted in a free kick for the home team, giving them their first serious opportunity. Julian Brandt missed the target with the free kick, never really testing Stefan Ortega, who was making his competitive City debut that evening. There weren’t many opportunities until City’s Julian Alvarez received his second caution of the game after the Argentine striker fouled Thorgan Hazard.
Adeyemi and Youssoufa Moukoko, among others, took many attempts on Ortega’s goal as Dortmund continued to have the better opportunities, but to no avail. The chance for City to score eventually materialised in the final minute of stoppage time when Nathan Ake’s head connected with Phil Foden’s free-kick. However, the Dutch defender was unable to direct his effort on goal, resulting in a scoreless halftime.

Joao Cancelo was replaced in the second half by fellow former Dortmund player Manuel Akanji, who it may be believed was brought on out of caution following Cancelo’s earlier accumulation of a yellow card. After some early Dortmund pressure, City had their chance when Riyad Mahrez was unjustly hauled to the ground by Emre Can, earning the visitors a penalty.
Following his terrible performance away to Copenhagen two weeks ago, Mahrez then saw Gregor Kobel save his chance, making it the second penalty the Algerian winger has missed for City in this season’s Champions League. Ilkay Gundogan fouled Moukoko as Dortmund attempted to counterattack, earning himself a yellow card against his former team.
After using his arm to stop an approaching effort from Adeyemi well outside the City box, Akanji subsequently collected a yellow card for himself at his former home, but Hazard’s next free-kick was sent straight towards the wall. Evidently having had enough, Guardiola made his third substitution of the evening, substituting Jack Grealish for his countryman Phil Foden.
Following this move, another one occurred when recent City academy graduate Cole Palmer replaced the disappointed Mahrez for a short period of time. The game ended scoreless, although Dortmund and City benefited from the outcome as the former advanced to the round of 16, and the latter solidified their position atop Group G.
