BWF Junior Badminton Championships: Sankar Muthusamy assures medal after QF win

BWF Junior World Championship Semifinal LIVE:  India’s Sankar Muthusamy has assured atleast a bronze medal for India but will look to change the colour of the medal as he takes on Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratchakul in the Boys’ Singles semifinals on Saturday. Muthusamy, who is the fourth seed defeated China’s Hu Zhe An in the Men’s Singles quarterfinal on Friday. The match is scheduled to take place at 1 PM. Sankar has already become the 9th Indian to win a medal in the history of the Junior Championships. But he will look to go one better than what Lakshya Sen achieved in 2018 as he is now just a step away from sealing a spot in the final. The fourth seeded Sankar, who was a Junior World No.1 for a few month earlier this year started the tournament.

Sankar started the tournament in the second round and defeated Singapore’s Remus Neg in straight games. In the third round, he dropped just nine games and won against Basilio Porto to enter the pre-quarterfinals. In the fourth round too he didn’t break any sweat as he clinched a 21-10, 21-12 victory against Nachakorn Pusri. His biggest challenge came in the quarterfinal against China’s Hu Zhen who won the second game and stretched the contest into the decider before Sankar finally won it 18-21, 21-18, 16-21.

Meanwhile, Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul defeated China’s Pan Yinlong in straight games 22-20, 21-19. He began the tournament by defeating South Korea’s Park Sung-ju 21-6, 21-17 into the first round. He clinched a biggest upset of the tournament as he defeated second seed Alwi Farhan in straight sets to advance to the third round. He faced Prahdika Shujiwo in the third round and dropped a game. He entered the quarterfinal after defeating Eogene Ewe 21-18, 21-17 in the fourth round.
