Ballon d’Or Ballon d’Or Awards: After much anticipation, Real Madrid and France forward Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or 2022. He edged over the likes of Sadio Mane, Kevin De Bruyne, and Lewandowski to win the coveted trophy. Earlier, his teammate Thibaut Courtois was awarded the Yachine Trophy. FC Barcelona Femini, forward Alexia Putella won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the second consecutive time. While youngster Gavi succeeded Pedri to win the Kopa Trophy. The much-awaited Ballon d’Or 2022 came to a conclusion with Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema winning the trophy for the first time. The 34-year-old France international, had a season of highs with the Los Blancos. He scored an exorbitant number of 44 goals in 46 games for the club across all leagues. A tally of 15 assists was also added to his numbers. Benzema edged past the likes of Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane to attain the ultimate glory. Kevin De Bruyne, Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah made into the top 5 as well.

 

Real Madrid custodian Thibaut Courtois was awarded the Yachine Trophy for his heroics under the bar. The Belgian international was named the Man of the Match in Real Madrid’s Champion League Final victory. He got away with 23 clean sheets in 57 games. At the same time, Courtois rendered 61 saves in the Champions League to hand Real Madrid their 14th trophy.

As for arch-rivals Barcelona, they were not short of accolades as well. Robert Lewandowski took home the Gerd Muller Trophy for the second time. At the same time, FC Barcelona Femini stalwart Alexia Putellas retained her Ballon d’Or. Barcelona and Spain youngster Gavi succeeded his teammate Pedri as the Kopa Trophy winner. The highlight of the moment was Didier Drogba comparing the Gavi-Pedri duo to that of the legendary Xavi-Iniesta midfield.

Sadio Mane was awarded the Socrates award for his charitable deed back in Senegal. He had helped build a number of schools, hospitals and other necessary resources for the betterment of his home country. Manchester City was given the title of the Club of the year. 

This year’s Ballon d’Or bore a lot of surprises. The first being Lionel Messi’s absence from the top 30 nominees. His contemporary Cristiano Ronaldo also failed to make it to the top 10 for the first time in a decade. The 2022 Ballon d’Or looked to mark the fading of the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry, the greatest of the last decade. At the same time, England star Harry Kane not making it to the top 20 came as a surprise to many. However on a positive note, a new era looks to usher as youngsters Haaland, and Vinicius Jr make it ahead of the stalwarts
