New skipper Pat Cummins admitted on Wednesday that Australia have a point to prove. The T20 WC failure at home hasn’t gone down well with the Kangaroo fans. But against a rampant English side, Australia have a lot of work to do. Both Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are under fire for their poor form with the white ball.
“I think you always have a point to prove, especially playing here in Australia. We want to win every series we play, we probably expect that. The core of this squad was part of that T20 side so. It’s a different format. But we probably didn’t play as well as we know we can. This gives us an opportunity straight away to play against the best,” the new captain Pat Cummins said.
Australia head into the series with a near full-strength side apart from Glenn Maxwell. The all-rounder broke his leg in a freak accident at a birthday party. With Finch no longer in the team, Travis Head will open with David Warner.
Head has a strong record as an ODI opener. He has scored nearly 600 runs in 15 innings including a century in Pakistan. But he hasn’t made a sizeable score so far this summer.

For England, it will be about carrying the T20 momentum in ODI format. Eight members from England’s successful T20 World Cup squad will feature in the one-day series. Jos Buttler and Sam Curran will kick start a year-long build-up to defending their 50-over title in India.
They also boast Sam Billings, Jason Roy and James Vince. They are regulars in Australia’s Big Bash League and are familiar with local conditions. However, England’s hero in the T20 World Cup final, Ben Stokes, will play no part after calling time on his ODI career. However, it will be a chance for Jason Roy to restart his white ball career. England dropped him from the T20 squad in favour of Harry Brook.
